About Churchill Guitars

David Churchill is one of Australia's leading steel string flat top guitar makers, established 30 years.

All guitars are hand built by David Churchill, using only aged timbers and specialising in cedar tops with Indian rosewood back and sides.

Used and played by some of Australia's finest musicians such as Jeff Lang, Darren Jack, David Ross Macdonald (Waifs), Hat Fitz, Adam Hole, Matt Fagan, Ray Beadle, Don Neander, Shannon Bourne

Models

All guitars are handbuilt by myself in a small workshop where temperature and humidity are controlled to suit guitar building.
Churchill guitars are available in two shapes and sizes, both of which are of original design.

Small body in cutaway or full.
Jumbo in cutaway or full. Both available in 6 string or 12 string.

The Jeff Lang signature model lapsteel is made of western red cedar soundboard and cocobolo back and sides.

All prices and dimensions available on request

Materials

Soundboards are selected from quarter sawn split billets of western red cedar. This wood produces warm tones and exceptional bass response which makes these guitars suitable for many styles of playing .
East Indian rosewood which has been air dried in the workshop for ten years or more is used for the back and sides.
The fingerboard and bridge are made of ebony, and mahogany is used for the neck.
The rosette is hand made from thuja burl, birdseye maple and abalone.
I offer three colours for top purflings and rosette surround,
Blue, green or salmon.
The back and side purflings are a single white pin stripe.
Body bindings are rosewood.
A two way adjustable truss rod is fitted, accessed from the headstock.
This is covered by a handmade plate of pearl and ebony.
The guitars are fitted with gold Schaller vintage machine heads with ebony buttons.
Available in high gloss finish only .

Darren Jack
Known to everyone as Jacko, here’s a top blues man, well respected for his outstanding guitar playing and vocals, and well known as a front man for Third Degree..

He has been a Churchill player for many years now, undertaking much more solo acoustic work since his new acquisition, a 2005 small body cutaway. He says he can’t put it down.

There isn’t a blues festival he hasn’t played .

Adam Hole
Adam has been a supporter of my guitars for a few years now. He owns a small body cutaway and more recently acquired one of my lapsteels, as shown on the opening page of this website.

As a guitar player he ranks with the best, with good vocals and a full on approach to performing. He plays solo and also teams up with Marji Curran for a great duo.

Adam also accompanies me to guitar shows and festivals to do the demo work.

Jeff Lang
I have been making Jeff Lang’s acoustic guitars for the last 13 years and it has been my privilege to do so.
At present he has two 6 strings, a 12 string and a lap steel.

The Churchill’s feature on every album he has made.
Jeff is an exceptional talent in all respects, as a singer, songwriter and guitar player.
We have worked together on many projects and there have been many hours spent in my workshop.
He has an uncanny understanding of the guitar.

Thanks a million Jeff..

David Ross Macdonald
I first met Dave at the National Folk Festival in Canberra a few years back as a drummer with the Waifs. He had some spare time between gigs so he checked out the musical instrument makers tent.
He became a Churchill owner that day.
He is a delightful finger picker and has a rare talent for song writing.
His album “Southern Crossing” is a fine example of his work and also is a unique showcase and promotion of Australian Luthiers.
His new album “Far from Here” is superb.
Always on tour somewhere around the globe.

Hat Fitz
Fitzie is the only man who calls me “churchie”
(I think I am named after his guitar)

He is an authentic blues man with endless talent and ability.
A true Australian , he is well known at all the festivals.
He lives in Queensland.

Don Neander
Don has owned his first Churchill for 14 years now.
As I write this I have just finished building his second 6 string , which has been a great honour for me.
Don has helped to put Churchill Guitars on the map.
We have done more shows and festivals together than I can count, with Don doing demos and electrifying audiences with his mastery of the instrument .. and still is!
Don lives in Perth

Shannon Bourne
I met Shannon at a guitar show when he was just 13. I remember him saying “I’m going to have one of those Churchill’s one day”
It must have been 8 years later when he came to the workshop to order his own.
He is a fantastic player with an inventive, classy style. His partnership with Chris Wilson has been very fruitful and it’s always worth seeing them perform. Check out Shannons new album …

Jeff King
Jeff and Ron King are founding members of the Foreday Riders.

Jeff has had his Churchill for about ten years now and it’s done plenty of work in that time at many festivals and shows. Jeff has a sweet style of playing and is always a pleasure to hear and watch.

Dirk Dubois

Dirk is well known as a member of “Chain”.

He is also a solo blues artist and a fine musician and guitar player. He often performs with Lil’Fi

Ray Beadle
I met Ray when he was at a music show at Darling Harbour in Sydney when he was just 16 years old. That year he had his first Churchill.
He is an outstanding player and performer, has worked solo as well as with his band, and for a time teamed up with the King brothers making the album “Down Home Bebop”.
His solo CD “Moving On” shows off his great ability.
He also teams up with Jacko, a pretty special duo, in the Sydney area.
